The tiny haven of Davenport began its life as Fort Davenport during the Second Seminole War in 1838. The fort — and subsequent town — were named after Colonel William Davenport, a local commander in the war. The town of Davenport got its start in the 1880s when the South Florida Railroad came to the area. Though small in size, the city is close to I-4 and US 27 — an area growing with shopping, restaurants and golf courses, as well as quick and convenient access to Central Florida’s key attractions.
Things To Do
While much of its popularity stems from its close proximity to the major Orlando-area attractions, Davenport boasts several noteworthy attractions of its own. One of the area’s most unusual spots is the Wallaby Ranch – where you and your instructor will be towed 2,000 feet into the air in a tandem hang glider, then released to gently glide back down. While the view from above is magnificent, the sights on the ground are pretty great, too. The area is surrounded by natural Florida woodlands and includes a pool, playground and mountain bike trails. If bunkers and birdies are more to your liking, Davenport boasts two large golf courses. And check out Lake Kissimmee State Park, known for its nature paths, horse trails and boating activities.

Yearly special events include the Original Highwaymen Art Extravaganza, Big Belly Barbecue Battle, Trash to Treasure Sale, Horse Creek Festival, Winterfest and Lighted Christmas Parade.

Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center, owned in part by physicians, is a 193-bed, acute care accredited hospital by the Joint Commission providing services in NE Polk County.
